This is the End?

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Sunday 30 November 2008 5:17 pm

Movember 30th can be called a lot of things.  The end of a month, the accomplishment of more than 1 goal, a time to reflect on the kindness of people and some people will call it the end of Movember for this year.  To me, Movember 30th is so much more.

I first heard about Movember in October and thought that this would be an awesome way to not only grow a super sweet moustache and not take any flack for it, but it is also a great buzz marketing way to raise money for a cause that has affected my family and is near and dear to me.

To be honest, it started out as just a fun way to not have to shave.  I had no idea the reaction I would get from just growing a Moustache, but on this little Island I found people were really getting into it.  A lot of others started growing their own Moustaches and collected money for themselves for MOvember.  Not only did people learn about it in Antigua, but I also had people from Canada say that they heard about Movember through MoMoFoSho.com and had started their own fun way not to shave.  This buzz marketing effect is what its all about.  Although the main goal is to raise money for Prostate Cancer Research, it is also bringing awareness about the disease to the masses and letting people know that they should be checked for Prostate Cancer as it is 90% fixable if caught early.

I remember getting the first 2 donations from two girls, Vanessa and Chrissy, who I will say are good friends, but I had no idea they would be the first to donate.  To be honest, until they donated I had no idea if I could even get 1 person to donate to the Moustache Cause.  From those initial donations, it snowballed and half way through the month we had reached our first goal of $1000 USD in donations.  Along with these donations I learned a friend of mine actually has prostate cancer, which just made me feel like I was doing the right thing by raising awareness.

So once we had reached our first goal of $1,000 USD, I bumped up the new goal to $1500 by the end of Movember.  I won’t lie, the donations didn’t come as fast as the first half of the month, but I had faith that we would make it.

Yesterday, with a donation from my best friend from grade 2, John Boxall, donated $10 bringing the total to $1370.56.  I have to say I was stoked on this donation.  John and I were best of friends when we lived in Rossland as kids.  I can remember vividly when his family moved away, as a kid I was crushed.  Thank god for technology because in 2007 through facebook, I found my old best friend.  This kid is a genius, I swear, I think a lot of my friends are innovative and incredibly smart, but I know John has a bright future.  He is one of the founders of http://www.handimobility.ca/ and to me is a genius that can see into the future when it comes to technology.  Thanks John for that donation!

Yesterday was also our party “I Love Moustache” in Antigua.  I wasn’t to sure how this party was going to go.  It was next door to a Abracadabra’s costume party and these parties are always packed.  Around 10, we had 10 people at our party and at the peak we had about 40 people come by.  This was great!  I was so happy people came to support our party!  I loved the owners of the club that we held it at, Jill and Carolyn.  They both drew on two sexy Moustaches and helped us support the Mo and our cause!

The party was great!  In Antigua, all you get to hear is Dance Hall and Reggae.  I love Reggae as much as the next person but I also LOVE indie music and electro.  So my Mo Bro Sam and I played some awesome music and actually had people dancing to it!  Thats another accomplishment, that probably can only be accomplished with the power of a Moustache!

We set up a bucket at the bar and collected donations and we managed to raise $142 at the party pushing us over our $1500 goal right in the nick of time!

I have learned so much over the past month and have felt that I have helped accomplish something huge.  But MOvember isn’t about me, it is about everyone!  I want to take this time to thank everyone that has supported Movember!  Without you we couldn’t have raised over $12,000,000 world wide in a month.  So a round of applause for everyone for helping raise awareness and money for Prostate Cancer.

As I mentioned, Movember can be called a lot of things, but to me, it is definitely not the end of anything, but only the beginning.

Happy Movember!

Greg

TGIF - MOvember 29th - Super Heros!

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Friday 28 November 2008 10:13 am

Movember 28th

Movember 28th

This week has been probably one of the most stressful weeks since I have moved to the Caribbean.  I won’t get into details, but sometimes people can boggle my mind on how they interact with other people, I think I fall into this category as well.  Sometimes it would be nice to have a camera on you all the time, recording what you do and say so you could analyze exactly what comes out of your mouth and how it is said.

This being said, Thank God It is once again Friday!  The fact that it is friday gives me so much joy this week.  Usually Friday is just another day, but today Friday is the end of a week that has made me lose hair.. and that is significant, as I don’t have much more hair left to lose :(

Another Reason its so exciting that it is Friday is Tomorrow is “I Love Moustache” at Life in English Harbour.  In Antigua, it is rare to have any other music played besides super commercial house music, dance hall, top 40 hip hop and reggae.  Now I am a fan of all of this music, but when its all you hear, you kind of go a little crazy (or at least I do).  So I am stoked to be able to hear some music that isn’t the normal here.

Now tomorrow night should be excellent, it will be a night that all the Antiguan Mo Bro’s and Mo Bro’s World Wide will be excited for.  It is the one night where we can put on our Moustache Display and show the world that together, united, we fight against Prostate Cancer.  We are kind of a Super Hero Team!

So let me introduce my Team to you!

Movember 24th

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Monday 24 November 2008 11:16 pm

Dogs love Moustache!

Dogs love Moustache!

Another day in Paradise, Gambling, Martial Arts, New Co Workers… All in a days work, and not in that order either.  The moustache has hit a new level of awesome.  Today I can now say I have experienced what experts call… “The Flavor Saver”.

My routine starts at 5:30, I wake up, let the dog out, eat my lucky charms, shower, walk the dog, feed the dog, get ready for work, brush my teeth, get my computer and run off to work to get there by 7am.

Today Was a bit different, I somehow in my sleep turned my alarm off - so luckily my good ol’ internal clock woke me up at 7:30, so I was running around trying to get to work as quick as possible.  Let the dog out, eat my breakfast, shower, walk the dog, feed the dog, started getting to work and then hopped in my car to work.. and thats when it happened.  I licked my lips and to my great suprise, tasted the minty freshness of my tooth paste in my flavor saved moustache!  Brilliant!

So I tested this new found power out at lunch when I went to the sticky wicket.  I had passion fruit juice and like clockwork, on the drive back to the office, I tasted the wonderful sweet taste of flavor saved Passion Fruit juice!

Although, I am loving my new found moustache power, I must say, this beast is getting itchy!  I am wondering if it stops itching after a while or if people just get used to the itch!

Another BIG thank you to my boss and good friend Rob!  Rob, thank you so much for donating to my extremely gross (and by gross I mean sexy) moustache, and for letting me sport it in the office.  In fact I think Rob takes great pride in knowing about my Moustache accomplishment!

Rob donated $100, which brings the total up to 1210.56!  We are ALMOST there people!! I really think we can make $1500 by Nov 30th!

Thanks again!

Thank You Lynn!

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Monday 24 November 2008 12:27 am

My cousin Lynn has always been way to good to me and my family over the past years.  She is a great cousin and a great person.  She has always been so generous, thoughtful and caring and today is no different.  I came home from Sunday at the beach to find that my Cousin has donated $100 to cure Prostate Cancer!

Lynn you have always been so generous I hope that some of it rubs off on me, I think you are an amazing person and have always looked up to you with your caring and generosity.  I honestly have learned from you that simple things always mean the most, like a card on your birthday, and even supporting growing a horribly gross (by gross I mean sexy) Moustache!

You are wonderful and I really love that you have helped support me in this great cause.  Come visit me down here, I’m sure you need a Caribbean Vacation!

Love ya!

Great Weekend!

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Monday 24 November 2008 12:19 am

This weekend was one of those weekends that probably would have convinced MTV to make the next season of Maui Fever into Antigua Fever!  Kind of one of those paradise weekends that people think is everyday life in the Caribbean even though its usually far from the stereotype.

I have to admit, I love people, I am a people person, but sometimes I LOVE just spending a night on my lonesome.  Friday was one of those nights.  Stayed in, ate junk food and played video games and watched tv till 4am just because I wanted to.

Saturday was a ridiculously great night.  Our German/Austrian country manager is in Antigua for the week and he flew in on Saturday.  So we took him out.  5 shots of jager each and a few mixed drinks with a beer or 3 to top it off, I should interject here and let you all know I get drunk off of 2 beer, it was a good night!  I love my friends in Antigua, they are so welcoming of new people and they all took Christian the Country Manager in with open arms and a drink in their hands to “Prost” the 6″6 tall Austrian man.

Saturday at Abras with good friend Manon!

Saturday at Abras with good friend Manon!

Today, was wonderful and I wish I had brought my Camera to document the epicness that was today.  It was my friend Nick’s birthday and when it comes to birthdays on the island, all the expats come together to celebrate!  Today was no different.  It seems like when you have cheap alcohol, skilled people, and beaches where you can set up a giant sound system with djs, construct a tent out of wood and a tarp and BBQ and drink to your hearts content, it will always equal an amazing day.  Well that was today in a nut shell.  Perfectly sunny, waves were crashing and all our good friends were at Half Moon bay!  AND I FINALLY SPUN A REALLY GOOD DJ SET!!!!! :)

I didn’t have my camera, but tons of pictures were taken, including some with me and my mo bro Sam!

This was an unreal weekend!  Makes me remember how sweet life really is!

I Love Moustache!

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Friday 21 November 2008 9:07 am

My Sister from another Mister Ketrena Made me this super awesome I Love Moustache t-Shirt Design!  I think its pretty awesome and am going to see if there is anywhere in Antigua that can print t-shirts for the “I Love Moustache” Party next Saturday Movember 29th!

How sweet is that!  I have put the designs up at cafepress.com, they actually make decent quality stuff, just I wish they had more selection and could make the Clothes look cooler… like this design on a Trucker hat would be awesome, but they only let you put it in the middle and have it small.  I want it big and sexy, just like my moustaccio!

Thanks Ketrena!

Pure Epic Amazing Awesomeness!

Posted by Greg Harrison | El Moustache Presidente, Movember | Thursday 20 November 2008 10:29 pm

This could possibly the most epic day of Moustache Growth to date!  I had asked a while ago for people to make me some signs of support to support the moustache growth and hopefully by getting them to make signs more people would come check out the Mo and Donate.

Well a week went by and no one had come through, which is understandable because its busy times, but today I got my first submission.  I personally am nominating these two girls for El Moustache Presidente!

So before I get to the fan signs I should introduce these unreal ladies to you people.  I met Vanessa and Jen last time I was back in Vancouver through one of my good friends Chris.  I was only back home for a few days so I tried to make the best of everyday and night.  I think that week I got a total of about 12 hours of sleep in 6 days.  So when Chris said he wanted to go out, I was game for it.

So Chris, Vanessa, Jen and I decided to go to Celebrities on a tuesday night and my god it was great, the Jen and Vanessa loved dancing, I loved dancing, the music was awesome, and I was with my good friend Chris!  So 3 o’clock rolls around and I drove Jen and Vanessa an hour ride home, and went on my merry way having had a great night!  I kept in touch with them because they are super rad girls and I hope to hang out with them when I get back to vancouver someday and also cuz I have a secret crush on jen… but don’t tell her.

Anyways, I had mentioned MoMoFoSho.com and said that if I could get them to make a sign for me, I could get more visitors based on the fact that gorgeous ladies pictures were on my website!  They seemed stoked.  TODAY, I got an email with 10 pictures to use on here and I couldn’t have a bigger smile, this made my week for sure!

HOW AMAZING IS THAT!!!!!!

Vanessa and Jen… Thank you!  You girls are amazing and I miss you and you just made me miss Vancouver more than anything!  I can’t wait to come dance the night away with you both!  You guys are up for El Moustache Presidente for sure!

Thanks Steve!

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Thursday 20 November 2008 2:00 pm

Alright!  Steve has started off our second goal with a $10 donation to the Mo and prostate cancer.

Steve is one of my best friends and has been for a while now.  He is one of the first people I became really good friends with when I moved to Prince George for University and we have stayed pretty tight for many a years despite the fact we have never really lived in the same city for more than a few months!  He was in Korea, while I was in Vancouver and now hes In White Rock, while I am in Antigua, and now he is thinking of possibly going back to Korea.  The though of Steve is Korea is awesome, he is about 6′6 and weighs a good 205-215 pounds of muscles.  The last time he was there he taught english.  The first day he got a note from one of the kids that said “Teacher, You are so LONG, how Long are you?”

Thats my uncle stevisie!  Steve Miss ya buddy, hope you can make it down to Antigua next year for sailing week!!!

THanks again, your donation is super appreciated!

MOvember 20th - Zombie Spider?

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Thursday 20 November 2008 9:39 am

Movember 20th

Movember 20th

I swear, driving to work has to be one of my least favorite things these days.  For some reason I keep getting stuck in traffic.  Its crazy, there are only 68,000 people on this island and somehow the roads get so congested its crazy.  I think I would personally take Vancouver Grid Lock over Antigua traffic jams any day, because at least in Vancouver people use their head.  Here they always try to be first, don’t know what merging means, and I see more accidents here than in Vancouver.  And when there is an accident here, it takes literally hours to clean up.

So while I was waiting in traffic I decided to take my Movember 20th picture first thing in the morning.  I think the car kinda ads to the Moustache.  Seriously, I could have put my camera on timer mode for 10 minutes, waited for the picture to be taken, and I bet I would have only moved a couple of inches.  This stupid traffic is adding an extra 30 minutes to my travel in the morning! Arg!

This being said, if this is the worst part of my day I live a pretty good life.  So I shouldn’t complain.

EXCEPT, I can complain about ZOMBIE SPIDER!

Giant Spider tries to push over my house!

Giant Spider tries to push over my house!

Well…. it may not really be a zombie.. I may just be paranoid these days with zombie goat and all… but this spider is the biggest spider I have seen in my life in person.  Reminded me of the movie 8 legged freaks, it practically was like 10 times bigger than me!

I am stoked for the weekend.  My Friend Nick is having his birthday at Half Moon Bay on Sunday.  For people that haven’t come visited me yet, and or haven’t been to antigua (the ones I don’t know), Half Moon is one of the nicest beaches you will ever see, its rated in the top 10 beaches in the world.  I love it because it gets waves, which makes it awesome for skim boarding, since the beach is so long and flat, and its so big and gorgeous!  Just a great magical place.  I haven’t been for a while and am itching to go!

Oh My God!  My Friend Sam, went away for 2 weeks on a surf/teaching trip to Costa Rica (I think he went to CR, or PR) and when he left he had no moustache.. then Bam, wow, Suprise, RETURNED WITH THE SEXIEST MO I HAVE SEEN!

Motastic Mo of Sam the Man D!

Motastic Mo of Sam the Man D!

Good Job Mo Bro!  This is a great accomplishment!  Not only did you get to go catch some amazing waves and brag about it, you can now brag about being 133% more good looking with that Moustache!  Thats a whole lot of good looking in one Moustache!

Sam is also one of the DJs spinning at “I Love Moustache” on Movember 29th at Life in English Harbour town, so come on down!  Abracadabras is also having a Pajama Party that night, so come first to “I Love Moustache” have a few drinks and then you can go to either Pajama Party or to The Gallery!  The Gallery is quickly becoming my favorite place to go out to!

MOvember 19th

Posted by Greg Harrison | Movember | Wednesday 19 November 2008 6:52 pm

This Moustache is getting huge and starting to itch a lot!

Movember 19th has been a pretty good day!  Got a lot of work done, took a nap after work and got to make that super cool video!  Every wednesday I get a cleaner to come and clean my house and this may be why I love wednesdays, when I come home, my bed is made.  Someday if I ever have a wife, I hope she will make the bed for me… I don’t mind walking the dog, cooking cleaning, but having a made bed is probably the best thing ever!  I love it so much.

I can’t believe how fast Movember has gone, to think we only have 10 days left is unreal!  Which means 9 days till the Movember party!

So remember even though our first goal was met, we can still take donations and I really appreciate them!  Also there is still time to submit submissions for El Moustache Presidente, and I am still hoping for some “I love Moustache” signs!
